Freshwater lakes, rivers and other waterways are an essential part of North American Culture. Artwork of these bodies of water features freshwater fish, fishing, boats, shipping, lighthouses, hunting, waterfowl and other subjects.
Freshwater fish artwork displays a wide range of fish, including native fish as well as introduced species. Among the most commonly reproduced fish are members of the bass and sunfish family such as bluegill, pumpkinseed, crappie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rock bass and others. Other species found in freshwater art include pike, pickerel, musky, walleye, sauger, white bass and yellow perch.
Freshwater trout are well represented in American art. Species from this group are native to waterways such as lake trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, steelhead and others.
Lighthouses of the region are often favorite subjects of artists. Hundreds of lighthouses have occupied lakes of the region through several centuries. North American lighthouses are often memorialized thru photography, paintings and sculptures.
American and Canadian artists paint, photograph and create carvings of ducks, geese and swans. Waterfowl of Canadian and American lakes includes trumpeter swans, snow geese, Canada geese and Atlantic brant, mallards, black ducks, green-winged teal, American widgeon, gadwall, pintail, scaup, redheads, ring-necked ducks, ruddy ducks, bufflehead, shovelers, goldeneye, mergansers, old squaw, scoters and others.
Vessels of all sizes are popular in American art. Subjects of watercraft art vary from commercial fishing boats to the massive ore boats that once travelled North American lakes, rivers and waterways. Artists offer a stunning range of boat art, including photographs, paintings, sketches, line drawings, model ships and other representations.
Landscapes, beaches, river banks and shorelines are also popular. These works of art showcase scenes from past and present along the coasts of famous bodies of freshwater such as the Great Lakes and America's great rivers.
